Extensive gravel bars and intact wild river sections characterise the Tyrolean Lech stretch and the shared border with Germany. Such ecosystems are among the most threatened landscape types in Central Europe.

As part of the LIFE project, thirteen river restoration actions and various species protection measures are being implemented on the Tyrolean Lech and its border with Germany. The selected stretches of measures are particularly suitable for the restoration of actively shaped gravel surfaces and pioneer habitats. However, not only habitats for highly specialized species adapted to wild rivers are newly created, but at the same time the deepening of the riverbed is stopped and the groundwater level is stabilized or raised as an additional benefit. The floodplains, their inhabitants and ultimately also people benefit from this in the form of better flood protection. All measures are accompanied by an extensive monitoring program.

The project has been completed since September 2022.
